hile in 7th grade, Richard Dell’s math teacher recognized Richard’s gift and love of math and drawing. The teacher instilled the thought that Richard should consider being an Architect when he grew up! Richard took that thought and ran with it – and he has been running ever since.
Mentored by an architect family friend, Richard started his interning at Charles Luckman Associates while in college. Accepted at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s prestigious School of Architecture, Richard thrived under the pressure required to complete his architectural degree. Taking advantage of Cal Poly’s Study Aboard program he completed his 5th year studies at the Florence, Italy campus. Richard remained in Italy following graduation, working with a Siena-based Architect renovating Italian farmhouses/compounds in and around Siena.
Returning to the US, he worked for several large Los Angeles firms (DMJM, Nadel) and developers before deciding to open his own firm in 1980. R. E. Dell & Associates, Architects merged with another firm in 1990 and in 1999 Richard joined forces with another Cal Poly grad and a former employee to form Maple Dell McClelland Architects, LLP which thrived until 2010 when the remaining partners forged their individual paths. Recognizing his real desire was always to run his own firm, Richard restarted Richard E. Dell, Architects, Inc., better known as RED Architectural Group, and hit the ground running once again.
